Greetings Fellow Anti Fracking Foot Soldiers:
All those who have been following me know three things:
A) That I have not posted in this blog for some time (since May actually).
B) That my absence here does not mean I have not been posting articles against Fracking...just that it is very hard to find time to maintain multiple blogs. For that, I do apologize.
C) That I have still been active in the Anti Fracking movement, was at and spoke at the NYDEC hearing held here in Sullivan County NY in Niovember.
Looking at my own time constraints, realize that I need to consolidate my efforts to better maximize my time, and better serve the Anti-Fracking movement as well. For that reason, I have exported all the articles from this blog to my "Mountaindale After Dark" blog, where I have been posting on various issues and news items, including the issue of Fracking.
Over the next few days and weeks will also move all the useful links accumulated here on Fracktoid to the "Mountaindale After Dark" blog, and hope everyone who has enjoyed the content here will go over and check out this blog, bookmark it and follow us regularly.
If someone in the movement is interested in taking over this blog, it's twitter account, please drop me a private email at marcwoodsocialimaging@gmail.com and be happy to discuss it with you.
You can read my latest Anti Fracking article here.
Fracktoid (noun) any human negatively impacted by the environmentally dangerous act known as Fracking or Hydrofracking. (B)Term used for a periodical or blog dealing with the subject of Fracking, and why it should be banned.

OMFG...Corbett Cronies THROTTLE FREE SPEAK....Deny Anti Frackers Voice At Committee Hearing
If a picture is worth a thousand words, this damning video is priceless...seems that the Pro-Natural Gas folks inside the Pennsylvania Governor's office will stop at nothing to silence those opposed to Natural Gas Fracking. Sure if I told you that the governor instructed staff to have two sign up sheets...one inside the room for PRO NATURAL GAS FOLKS, and one outside for ANTI FRACKERS (who were not allowed in to sign the other sheet), and told you that they then called up folks from the FIRST LIST ONLY, you would say I was a conspiracy nut...well, watched the video, and you decide. FACE IT FOLKS, WE ARE BEING RAIL ROAD'ED TO HELL ON A FRACK HIGHWAY.

Great Anti Frack Organization Meeting Today in North Branch
![]() |
| FRACKING is a World Wide CONCERN |
On my way home today, made a significant detour over to North Branch, NY for a Volunteer Organizational meeting hosted by Catskill Citizens. First, please visit their website. Secondly, consider donating to their cause, as these folks are working VERY HARD to reach out to the community, educate the public to just what FRACKING is, and to persuade our politicians in Albany to do the right thing.
My biggest regret today is that I did not have my camera along with me, so have to plan a second trip to the area in and around North Branch...if you want to see just what is at risk as the (un)Natural Gas industry plans a FRACKING ASSAULT on our lands, you could not ask for a better example than the drive along 17B out of Monticello toward North Branch. Beautiful lush farm land, steams and rivers shaded by majestic trees, fly fishermen knee deep in rushing waters, a trout on the line. Saw one American Bald Eagle, and so many hawks that I lost count of them. It is truly God's Country, and the Natural Gas industry wants to despoil it extracting Natural Gas to sell to China...YES, IT IS TRUE...as example, Chesapeake Energy has been selling LARGE SHARES of it's own holdings in the Marcellus Shale to overseas investors interesting in shipping it overseas, the largest deals being made with Chinese State Owned CNOOC.
Just here in lower New York State, we need to awaken and educate some EIGHT MILLION CITIZENS to the risks of Fracking, educate them on just what it is they stand to lose...both in natural beauty, and more importantly in clean fresh SAFE DRINKING WATER....to do that, organizations like that need your support, and your donations...just the yard signs that THEY HAND OUT FOR FREE are four dollars each, and trust me, the Natural Gas industry is giving away their own signs that read, "Friend of Natural Gas"...so it is imperative that organizations like Catskill Citizens have the ability to get their own signs out in peoples yards, imperiative that they have the resources to put a No Fracking button into the hands of every citizen they can find willing to wear one. Hopefully, those reading this blog will get involved in whatever way each of you can.
Which brings me to ONE LAST REQUEST in this article. I have been charged with a task...start compiling a list of Wolves in Sheep's clothing Environmental Groups, or Pro Natural Gas organizations that are a FRONT for the Natural Gas Industry, are wholly, or mostly FUNDED BY THE INDUSTRY...if we are to fight their PROPAGANDA CAMPAIGN, we have to identify their FALSE FRONT ORGANIZATIONS. So, if any of you know of organizations being FUNDED BY THE NATURAL GAS INDUSTRY, please email me their Organizational Name, and if you have it a link to their website. You can send the information to: fracktoidnews@yahoo.com All email will be kept confidential, but every organization identified and verified as being funded by the Natural Gas Industry will be A) put on a widely distributed list, and B) featured in our newest blog project, "FRACKTURDS".

Protesters Interupt Commission Meeting in Harriburg
Anti Frack Protesters yesterday interrupted the Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission's second meeting, speaking TRUTH against a commission stacked in favorite of the (un)Natural Gas industry, most of the seats filled with industry insiders, and chaired by what can only be described as a industry whore and slut in Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley who along with Governor Corbett have an affinity for sucking on the teat of (Un)Natural Gas Industry money changers as the industry lines their pockets with Fracked Gold.
![]() |
| Fracking Well Pad Daily Occurance? |
When one protester (Mr. Stilp)suggested that the Commission be disbanded, a new one with more CITIZEN STAKEHOLDER representation created, Lt. Governor Jim (slick lips) Cawley reportedly SNORTED, "the makeup of the commission is nowhere near as important as the information that is collected." He went on to spew forth some Paul Bunyan sized tall tale about how any one could get him information they wanted the commission to review, and he would see it was put into the right hands...YEAH RIGHT.
Nathan Sooy of Clean Water Action (one of the organizations who spear headed the protest) said Lt. Governor Cawley's assurances were not enough...and they are not. Any anal retentive chimp tripping on LSD could look at the Commission's make up and see where the ship is being steered. It is the tail wagging the dog, the (un)Natural Gas industry getting to create/write the guidelines that they will be willing to abide by as they rape the environment, disrupt communities, and poison water. Voluntary compliance is a farce, and putting together a Marcellus Shale Commission wherein the industry holds the MAJORITY VOTE is worthy of the Justice Department stepping in with a RICO investigation of the Governor, Lt. Governor and various members of the commission now seated.

Fracking Video...Easy To Understand...Please Watch
From the folks over at Fracked Again, a MUST WATCH video presentation on the EVILS of Fracking...it is like watching the old drivein movie cartoons at intermission encouraging us to go buy refreshments. I urge you to both watch it, and to share it with your friends, neighbors and countrymen. Meanwhile, you can read Chesapeake Energy's PROPAGANDA FACT SHEET here.

ASK GOVERNOR CUOMO TO CLOSE THE VERTICAL- WELL LOOPHOLE!
Upon taking office, Governor Cuomo reaffirmed Executive Order 41, which bars horizontal high-volume fracking until the DEC releases a final Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement. But, as we recently discovered, the industry has already been using high-volume "slickwater" fracking to develop vertical wells.
Whether injected in horizontal or vertical wells, huge quantities of fracking fluid pose the same serious risk to public health. Ask Governor Cuomo to close the vertical- well loophole by amending Executive Order 41 to bar all high-volume and all slickwater fracturing until the SGEIS is completed.
BILLS, BILLS, BILLS
No, we're not asking you for money! We're talking about Albany. The legislature is now awash in bills that would prohibit, postpone, or regulate fracking.
But are any of them going anywhere? Maybe not. At least not any time soon. We're told that the Assembly and Senate leadership intends to wait for the release of the Revised Draft SGEIS before attempting to regulate high-volume horizontal fracturing. "Give (DEC Commissioner Joe) Martens a chance to present his plan" seems to be the prevailing attitude.
But while the DEC continues to wrestle with the SGEIS, vertical fracking continues unabated. That is why bills that would regulate operations already underway in the state, need to be considered now.
END THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY'S "HAZARDOUS WASTE" EXEMPTION![]()
END THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY'S "HAZARDOUS WASTE" EXEMPTION
None of the pending bills is more important than A07013/S4616. It would overturn the law that exempts oil and gas waste from being classified as "hazardous," no matter how toxic and radioactive the material may be.
It's only common sense to classify waste according to the danger it poses, rather than according to the industry that produces it, but we can expect fierce resistance from the gas lobbyists. No doubt they'll complain that it's unfair to expect them to obey same laws that apply to every other industry!
THIRTY THOUSAND CITIZENS, AND ONE ATTORNEY GENERAL
THIRTY THOUSAND CITIZENS, AND ONE ATTORNEY GENERAL
Just days after citizens submitted thirty thousand written comments about the Delaware River Basin Commission's bone-headed plan to frack the watershed that provides fifteen million Americans with their drinking water, New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman announced that he would sue the federal government unless it agreed to conduct a full environmental review of the plan. All in all, it appears it will be a long, long time before the frackers have their way in the Delaware Basin.
IT'S OFFICIAL: SHALE GAS IS DIRTIER THAN COAL!
IT'S OFFICIAL: SHALE GAS IS DIRTIER THAN COAL!
The long awaited report "Methane and the Greenhouse-Gas Footprint of Natural Gas from Shale Formations" has been published in Climatic Changes Letters. And the conclusion should be eye-opening for anyone who ever fell for the line that shale gas is a "clean" fuel.
The [greenhouse-gas] footprint for shale gas is greater than that for conventional gas or oil when viewed on any time horizon, but particularly so over 20 years. Compared to coal, the footprint of shale gas is at least 20% greater and perhaps more than twice as great on the 20-year horizon and is comparable when compared over 100 years."
Draft versions of this report by Cornell professors Robert Howarth, Renee Santoro, and Anthony Ingraffea have been circulating for more than a year now; this final version is the first peer-reviewed study of the subject.

(un) Natural Gas-Excerpts From Landman's Bible...Dedicated to KnappAP
I was sent a link this morning via Twitter to a document file (PDF) of some five pages in length...said documents was supposedly dropped in someone's driveway (in Ohio) when the Landman came to visit. There is a fierce lash-back from the Pro-Frack people about the veracity of the document, people like @knappAP on twitter (who for all purposes is defacto a LANDMAN) saying those of us opposed to the fracking of our lands, the ruination of our communities as neighbor is pitted against neighbor made it up. So, upfront, will concede one point...neither side can prove the validity of the document...BUT it does ring true based upon my own time as a grassroots environmentalist that now goes back DECADES. So, based on my own instincts, I have decided that the document passed along to me is REAL ENOUGH, I believe it was DROPPED by a LANDMAN, and that the person who found it in their driveway decided to share it with the world. So, I have decided to share some of the salient "Quotes" from the document, as it really encapsulates the spirit and mentality of the demonspawn who aspire to be a landman, it captures the essence of the Natural Gas industry, their own Moral turpitude.
Oil and Gas exploration and drilling is meeting increasing resistance from local community groups, so it is essential to contact land holders and acquire signatures before sentiment by environmental and other public organizations limits our ability to obtain access to private land for oil and gas development.
LANDMAN BEWARE this passage seems to scream out...they (the general public) are becoming aware of our GREAT CON, and the time to quickly snatch up fistfuls of signed leases with the false promise of great wealth and riches is slipping away, so HASTE is IMPERATIVE in your task. Go forth and lie, cheat, coerce and make false promises, as we need those leases on, over, through and UNDER (don't forget under) the land to access minerals, and we need them now. The good news for our side, cause for us to DOUBLE OUR EFFORTS...we are being heard, and our hard work is making it harder, MUCH HARDER for these (un)Natural Gas landmen to dupe people into signing leases.
Remember, if at all possible try not to deliberately mislead the landowner, that only makes our position harder to defend at a later date.
Lets finish that sentence...but if you have to mislead the landowner, make sure you only make ORAL PROMISES and DECLARATIONS, as we all know a contract is only as good as the paper it is written on.
Most mid-west Americans dislike confrontation. Even if they disagree on a selling point, they are unlikely to confront you over it. Therefore it is critical to obtain a lease signature in the first meeting, or at least the agreement to sign and take the lease to a notary. Drive them to the notary if you have to. If they have time to think it over, they are more likely to decline the offer.
A WORD TO THE WISE HERE...if any sales person is hard selling you, trying to get you to commit RIGHT THEN, you need to RUN AWAY, as you are about to get screwed. There is no sale, no contract that needs to be signed RIGHT NOW. Tell them you will get back to them, will call them. Then take adequate time to think about the repercussions of signing a land lease (IE...you could later become a PARTY TO LITIGATION, be found to be a RESPONSIBLE PARTY if your neighbor's land is damaged as a result of drilling on your land). Consult with an attorney, find out what your rights, and WHAT YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES ARE.
Most landowners will be patriotic Americans, and will desire to free our nation from foreign oil dependence. make certain you lead with this selling point. CHINA bought more oil than the United States last year. Fear of foreign encroachment is the biggest asset we have in selling our development strategy.
Sad that a company would play upon, take advantage of our patriotism...even worse, is what they are not telling us about their own business model. Using just one company (and there are numerous examples), Chesapeake Energy" we should inform you, that all this Natural Gas that is supposed to break us of our dependence on FOREIGN OIL is actually being sold off to Foreign companies and nations...IE, just one deal that Chesapeake Energy made with CNOOC (fully owned by the Chinese Government) sold off over SIX BILLION DOLLARS worth of American National Gas...and this is JUST ONE DEAL.
ALWAYS start your conversation with a new potential signee on a point that they will agree with. This is pure psychology. They will be more likely to let you stay and talk. Studies show the longer you talk, the more chance we have of signing.
Again take NOTICE...this is a hard sell TACTIC....they want your (husband and wife) signature on that lease THAT DAY AT ALL COSTS, and have devised ways to get it...pitch the positive, and BUY TIME TO WEAR THEM DOWN.
At any point in the pitch if talk turns to local issues, environmental hazards, etc.. .a good way to re-direct the conversation is to re-engage over the nation's energy needs and the desire to be oil self-reliant. Come back to the mutually agreed upon point about freeing the nation. CHINA bought more oil than the United States last year!
Return to your MAJOR TRUMP CARD...patriotism, make it seem like the owner of the land would be UN-AMERICAN if they did not let the company rape their lands in the name of AMERICA,,,God save America, land of the FREE...stand beside me, and guide me as I sign on thee DOTTED LINE...and wrap, exit stage left with another LEASE IN HAND.
We are a small business, working closely with state governments when we set up wells. More educated landowners may know that we often sell our land leases to larger corporations.
Two points...they are being duplicitous from the start, presenting one picture when in reality they have ALREADY MADE A DEAL WITH THE DEVIL, are actually REPRESENTING A MUCH LARGER COMPANY without actually saying so...you should ask them about Gas Lease AUCTIONS FOLKS. Secondly, notice the remark, "more educated landowners" and digest that...what they are really saying, is that they see many of you as not overly smart, simply local folks, EASY PICKINGS.
Stress to the landowner that we. are primarily looking for oil resources. Searching for oil is less environmentally damaging than the claims against fracing. Oil exploration has heen conducted for centuries and is safe and effective. Do not deny that gas exploration may be possible, but do not emphasize it. Distance our selling position from the movie "Gasland". We do not want landowners linking that image with our development plans.
The old SLIGHT OF HAND TRICK...take their eye off of the real target of your desires, keep them confused, assure them you are an OIL MAN, not a GAS MAN, but make sure you tie up THE GAS RIGHTS, as that is what we really want.
If anyone knows about slick water fracturing, avoid the topic. Do riot discuss the chemicals and other material used during slick water fracturing. The strategy is to state the chemical mixtures used are proprietary and are highly diluted with water when injected. Reassure landowners that no well contamination has ever been documented. Do not mention water contamination in Pennsylvania We do not want to associate ourselves with potential ground water issues.
We all now know that WELLS HAVE BEEN POLLUTED, and SO DO THEY...yet, they continue to lie and play games. They will tell half truths...IE, "Fracking has never contaminated a well." Maybe, maybe not, but it has started the CHAIN OF EVENTS that will contaminate your well or underground drinking water source.
We covered only the first page and a half of this FIVE PAGE LANDMAN HOLY GRAIL...you get the picture. We here at Fracktoid are doing our best to give you the tools to make an intelligent choice when it comes to letting the (un)Natural Gas industry onto and under your property. Before you and your neighbors sign leases, EDUCATE YOURSELVES. Your clean drinking water, and the health of your children and their children DEPENDS ON IT.

All (un)Natural Gas Companies Employing Hydraulic Fracking USE Carcinogenic Agents
A new Congressional Report informs us that14 LEADING companies used 780 MILLION GALLONS of Hydraulic Fracking fluids from over 2500 different products which together contained 750 chemicals and components, most of which ARE EXTREMELY TOXIC and CARCINOGENIC, including both lead and benzene.
1. Keep in mind, this is only FOURTEEN Natural Gas/Oil companies here. What is the entire INDUSTRY TOTAL for these lethal cancer causing, birth defects causing, health destroying chemicals that are being so casually dumped into our communities?
2. Keep in mind, that the Natural Gas Industries own PROPAGANDA says that most times less than one percent of the Fracking Materials are anything but WATER and Sand...so, lets just assume here, that 60 percent of the remainder to get to 100 percent is WATER. That would mean these fourteen companies also used FORTY FIVE BILLION GALLONS OF WATER in fracking their wells.
It is bad enough that these companies are dumping LETHAL (as in death causing) chemicals into our lands, polluting our environment, threatening our health, but the problem MAGNIFIES when you start putting two plus two together. Think about it...FORTY FIVE BILLION gallons of water, that once mixed with the sand and LETHAL CHEMICALS is now POLLUTED, and LETHAL as well. Imagine over time that LETHAL CONCOCTION perculating up through to your WATER SUPPLY!...now mind you, the LANDMAN will tell you FRACKING HAS NEVER BEEN PROVED TO CONTAMINATE YOUR WATER...do yourselves a favor, and REWORD THE QUESTION!
"Uhhh...golly gee there Mr. Landman, that sure is reassuring to know, so can you tell me then, IF FRACKING has never been proved to contaminate ground water, what about everything else involved in Natural Gas Extraction...has ANY OF THAT ever contaminated peoples WATER SUPPLY?"
I would encourage ALL OUR READERS to go read the report, Chemicals Used in Hydraulic Fracturing (pdf), which came to be when SERIOUS CONCERNS about the unscrupulous practices of the Natural Gas companies saw CONGRESS (Republicans and Democrats) conduct an investigation on fracking and its SERIOUS NEGATIVE impact on US water quality...said report was launched by "Committee on Energy and Commerce" in February 2010.
So that you can know who these vile scum...I mean these companies are, here is the list.
Basic Energy Services (In THEIR OWN WORDS!) Management does recognize that by the very nature of its business, material costs could be incurred in the near term to bring Basic into total compliance. The amount of such future expenditures is not determinable due to several factors including the unknown magnitude of possible contamination, the unknown timing and extent of the corrective actions which may be required, the determination of Basic’s liability in proportion to other responsible parties and the extent to which such expenditures are recoverable from insurance or indemnification.
So, THEY ADMIT ENVIRONMENTAL HARM...but it is OK...we have insurance, and other responsible parties, so we can cover the bet.
BJ Services What to say about this company, that seems as bad if not worse than Halliburton...One of the world's largest oilfield services companies continued to tell U.S. EPA it was complying with an agreement barring the injection of diesel fuel near drinking-water aquifers, documents show, after admitting to Congress that it had violated the pact...Do read MORE.
Calfrac Well Services Lets just share the PDF to one lawsuit...if you are thinking of letting the Natural Gas industry FRACK YOUR LAND, you are ENCOURAGED TO READ this document.
Complete Production Services
Frac Tech Services We have already informed our readers in another article on this blog that this company admits in their year end report that their operations POSE SERIOUS THREAT TO THE ENVIRONMENT...Green Fold and investment portfolios should consider divesting themselves of any holdings of this and ALL COMPANIES involved in FRACKING in the opinion of this author.
You get the idea...these companies ALL WANT US TO BELIEVE them when they say, "Trust us, let us police ourselves, and COULD YOU SIGN THIS LEASE so we can frack your land.
Key Energy Services
RPC
Sanjel Corporation
Schlumberger
Superior Well Services
Trican Well Service
Universal Well Services
Weatherford
We strongly encourage our readers to let these companies know what is ON YOUR MIND...call them up, write them a letter, tell them you are tired of them FLOUTING the laws and regulations meant to keep us, our water and our families SAFE and HEALTHY.
Another MUST READ...EPA Fracturing Study Guide DraftFrom the Article...a partial CHEMICAL LIST
Amoung the many toxic chemical components used, methanol topped the list. It is a hazardous air pollutant as well as a candidate for regulation under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SWDA), and was used in 342 of 652 different fracking products. Second on the toxic chemicals list was ethylene glycol, used in 119 fracking products. It is also a hazardous air pollutant. Known carcinogenic agents used were diesel, naphthalene, formaldehyde, thiourea, nitrilotriacetic acid, benzene, Di (2-ehtylhexyl) phthalate, acrylamide, acetaldehyde, ethylene oxide, lead, and propylene oxide. Another high-volume chemical component used in fracking is 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE). It is known to cause hemolysis (destruction of red blood cells) and damage to the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. Between 2005 and 2009, the 14 companies combined to inject 21.9 million gallons of products containing 2-BE into the fracking process. Texas led the way with the highest volume of fracking fluids containing 2-BE, with 12,031,734 gallons, according to the report. Rounding out the top five states, in gallons, were Oklahoma (2,186,613), New Mexico (1,871,501), Colorado (1,147,614), and Louisiana (890,068).

Feed Stock...Why Most Natural Gas Will End Up In China and India
For starters, an ugly truth, a finger pointed at each of us collectively and individually. Our never ending need for STUFF, CONSUMER GOODS is slowly killing the only planet we have on which to reside. I read some time ago an article that claimed, "Our current rate of consumption, coupled with the rate of growth of our human population will see us needing TWO PLANET EARTH's by the year 2050 to meet the natural resource demands of our human needs. When are we going to wake up to the reality that less is more, when are we going to wake up to the fact that we need a NEW ECONOMIC MODEL based on something other than MASSIVE CONSUMPTION of material goods and services?
Which brings us to the primary focus of this article...the truth that our government, the Natural Gas industry, and perhaps the entire industrialized world does not want us to know, perhaps the single largest driving factor in the push to drill our lands here in America for Shale Gas...INDUSTRY...the production of ALL THAT STUFF we run out and HAVE TO BUY because commercials, and peer pressure tell us we need to have IT for our lives to be complete. How many of us in the battle to stop Horizontal Hydraulic Fracking are aware of the hard statistic that a full 43 percent of of the Natural Gas from ALL SOURCES is used in the industrial processes of making PRODUCT? Where is that product produced? Not here in America, our jobs have been outsourced in the name of a World Economy, and now the powers that be want to rape our lands for the necessary raw materials to feed the industrial machine that keeps the pockets of the rich and elite lined with gold...Look to India, look to China, and you will see the new Industrial Base that supplies our never ending demand for NEW STUFF.
Natural Gas is not just energy. Natural gas has a multitude of industrial uses, is absolutely crucial as a feed stock, providing the base ingredients for such varied products as plastic, fertilizer, anti-freeze, and fabrics. Look at the price of oil...the chemical industry depends upon fossil fuels as the base line from where almost all of today's products come from. As the dwindling supply of oil reserves see prices going up and up, alternatives are sought out...can we say Natural Gas? We are told we have a 100 year supply of it here in America right underneath our homes, properties and land...told that allowing (un)Natural Gas companies to drill for it will end our dependence on Foreign Oil. What is going to happen to the price of (un)Natural Gas as demand for this resource begins to rise...how long before we see the equivalent of FOUR DOLLAR A GALLON NATURAL GAS? Two questions:
1. How long is that (un)Natural Gas going to last if the world wide consumption rates continue to rise, if the Industrial Complex demands ever larger quantities to keep up with our collective demand for consumer goods?
2. We have pretty well tapped out the world's Oil Reserves, and now are turning to (un)Natural Gas to meet our ever growing demand for both energy and consumer goods. What do we turn to in say 50 years when we have played out the Natural Gas Reserves around the world?
Our Ameircan (un)Natural Gas is going to end up, when everything is said and done, in a landfill. The next time you are drooling over that new IPAD, or Kindle, the next time you cannot wait to get the newest, greatest gadget, ask yourselves, "Can Mother Earth afford the price it will cost her for me to own this new toy?" When you find yourselves plugged into your toys from the time you get up till the time you go to bed, ask yourselves, "What am I doing to TRULY CONSERVE the world's dwindling stockpile of raw resources and conserve energy. Lastly, before you allow Fracking in your neighborhoods, on your land, ask yourselves, "Where is that precious natural resource REALLY GOING?"
If the answer to that last question is, "To China and India where it will be used in a never ending mass production machine that spits out products that end up on landfills." maybe just maybe it is time to "Just Say No" when the landman comes looking for your signature on a (un)Natural Gas Lease.

Just in From Catskill Citizens...THE FRAC Act is Back!
GOOD NEWS...The FRAC Act has been reintroduced in the House and the Senate. This very important bill will require frackers to disclose the chemicals they inject underground and will once again subject hydraulic fracturing to the Safe Drinking Water Act, thereby closing the "Halliburton Loophole" in the Bush/Cheney Energy Act of 2005. Even if you previously expressed support for the FRAC Act, it's important to speak up now because Washington works differently...as far as Congress is concerned, H.R.1084/S587 is a new piece of legislation.
New York is already FRACKED. Big time.
Despite a three year de facto moratorium on high-volume horizontal hydraulic fracturing, more than 10,000 oil and gas wells have already been fracked in New York State, and that number is growing every day. That is NOT A TYPO FOLKS...despite the moratorium, 10,000 Hydraulic fracturing wells have been drilled here in NY.
Recently Catskill Citizens used the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) to obtain information on a few of these wells. We decided to look at the two dozen that have already been drilled in the Marcellus Shale. What we found was disturbing, sometimes shocking.
Records show that these Marcellus wells were fracked with dozens of chemicals including carcinogens and neurotoxins. We expected that.
But we also encountered page after page of blacked out information. And while it's hard to know exactly what information is being withheld, it certainly seems to go well beyond the secret chemical ingredients that the frackers claim are "proprietary". Information on chemical transportation and storage was also censored, and sometimes even the DEC forms themselves had been redacted! Note from fractoid...might be time to put people to the task of surveillance of these sites.
While we haven't examined all the records yet, we've already found evidence of numerous violations, including gas leaks and water contamination.
But the most startling find of all was the huge volume of fracking fluid that is now being injected in New York's vertical wells. Today's operations are a far cry from the 20,000 to 80,000 gallon frack jobs described in the DEC's 1992 Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS). According to the records we obtained, vertical wells are now being injected with around 350,000 gallons of fluid. We found one Marcellus well was has been fracked with 646,000 gallons toxic fluid!
Despite dramatic changes in fracking technology over the last twenty years, New York's DEC still permits vertical wells to be fracked according to ground rules that were developed in the late eighties and early nineties. This must change. New York needs to move quickly to put a halt to all fracking operations. If any fracking is permitted in the future, it must be subjected to the new Supplemental GEIS that is now being developed by the DEC.

If any fracking is permitted in the future, it must be subjected to the new Supplemental GEIS that is now being developed by the DEC.

A Recap of Day...Plus, A More Extensive Fracking Chemical List
Today was one of those days that ended up being productive in a very non-productive way. A friend of mine showed up with her friend who had an IPhone in desperate need of salvation. Taking a look, which started at 10 this morning ended up being an almost all day project to save the IPhone...it was touch and go for awhile, a minister on call just in case, but at around nine this evening, said phone had been restored to perfect working order with everyone happy...good news is I now have a night of Chinese Food coming my way. That is cause for some celebration, as I rarely get that treat living out in the boonies.
Sitting here with my Merlot doing some FRACK searches, and stumbled upon a blog titled The Sleeper Must Awaken that had a FABULOUS and much more extensive list of fracking chemicals...assuming here that the author will not mind my sharing the list below with my readers. On another news front...check back tomorrow for information on the FRACK Gathering In Albany on I believe April 11, 2011...a rally at eleven, lunch, and meeting with politicians in the afternoon. Great chance to get on a bus with like minded folk and go on a Road Trip. Right now, my own plan is too try to make this event, and take my camera along.
Stumbled across an old friend of mine on Twitter...wondering yet if Seth had made the Green Nuclear Butterfly connection yet...we shall see what we shall see.
Now without further delay, that Fracking Chemical list, and again The Sleeper Must Awaken for doing such a great job in compiling it, sharing it.

Some General Information, and NY State Fracking Chemicals List
So, just what kinds of chemicals are involved in Fracking...below is the NY State list (or at least that part of it that has made its way into the public domain) as well as a small list of terms that you might want to familiarize yourselves with.
The (un)Natural Gas industry would have us believe that these chemicals are harmless...IE, they have been quoted as saying things like, "They are common things you would find in your household detergents". OK...so we take the first item on the list Benzisothiazolin-2-one...and we find the following warning:
The acute health risks from exposure to N-butyl-1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one are potentially significant due primarily to its corrosive nature to the skin. However, the precautionary and first aid statements on the product label, as well as label directions requiring personal protective equipment (PPE) and other protective measures adequately mitigate the potential health risks to persons who may come in contact with the pesticide.
Gee...the acute health risks from exposure are POTENTIALLY SIGNIFICANT due primarily to its corrosive nature to the skin. First, how many citizens around fracking sights have complained of SKIN RASHES? Secondly, how many of these citizens are being provided the protective equipment (PPE) and are cautioned to take the protective measures necessary to MITIGATE this potential health risk?
OK, lets pick another one from the list...say, 1,4 Dioxane. Mind you, the (un)Natural Gas industry is throwing wells up in Suburban areas, wanting to put up thousands of wells here in New York in some of our most pristine lands, in NY's biggest water shed, but the EPA and these companies assure us that Dioxane is SAFE...is it? You be the judge...
1,4 Fioxane- Acute (short-term) inhalation exposure to high levels of 1,4-dioxane has caused vertigo, drowsiness, headache, anorexia and irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs in humans. It may also irritate the skin. Damage to the liver and kidneys has been observed in rats chronically (long-term) exposed in their drinking water.
Perhaps you should go look at some of the citizens complaints that speak of the negative health effects they are experiencing living near a Natural Gas well that is employing Hydro-Fracking techniques to increase gas capture. You will find many of them mimic the symptoms that are mentioned above, yet the industry says, "Prove it is our CHEMICALS!" We'll be exploring more of these chemicals in the days and weeks to come as we get more familiar with the issue.
"Chemical Constituents in Additives/Chemicals" used in Fracturing (New York State list)
(Extracted from http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/materials_minerals_pdf/ogdsgeischap5.pdf)Terminology
- Fracture Gradient
- The pressure to fracture the formation at a particular depth divided by the depth. A fracture gradient of 18 kPa/m (0.8 psi/foot) implies that at a depth of 3 km (10,000 feet) a pressure of 54 MPa (8,000 psi) will extend a hydraulic fracture.
- ISIP - Instantaneous Shut In Pressure
- The pressure measured immediately after injection stops. The ISIP provides a measure of the pressure in the fracture at the wellbore by removing contributions from fluid friction.
- Leakoff
- Loss of fracturing fluid from the fracture channel into the surrounding permeable rock.
- Fracturing fluid
- The fluid used during a hydraulic fracture treatment of oil, gas or water wells. The fracturing fluid has two major functions 1) Open and extend the fracture; 2) Transport the proppant along the fracture length.
- Proppant
- Suspended particles in the fracturing fluid that are used to hold fractures open after a hydraulic fracturing treatment, thus producing a conductive pathway that fluids can easily flow along. Naturally occurring sand grains or artificial ceramic material are common proppants used.
- Concise slang
- "Fracing" (sometimes spelled "fracking") is a shortened version of fracturing.

In Pennsylvania WTF Moment, Memo Strips Oil and Gas Inspectors Ability To ISSUE VIOLATION CITATIONS!
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, a rabid supporter of the shale gas industry is showing he has the balls of a Woolly Mammoth, the ethics of Bernard Madoff, and the compassion of one of Satan's demon spawn...seems he has decided Oil and Gas inspectors (the small handful there are) policing the Marcellus Shale lease holders can no longer issue a notice of violation without FIRST GETTING the approval of two of his political appointees. This blog encourages ALL ANTI FRACKERS ACROSS AMERICA to reach out via phone and fax and give Tom Corbett a piece of your mind.

Welcome To Fracktoid...Contributing Authors Welcome
| Fracking KILLS Communities |
First, I have to admit my own ignorance on the subject of Fracking...until Saturday March 26, 2011 I had not even heard of the word, let alone the environmentally reprehensible act it referenced. I was attending the showing of "The Greenhorns" at the (Catskill Art Society) CAS Arts Center Livingston Manor and during the question and answer immediately following, a woman was quiet vocal about it, and I had hoped to have a further opportunity to speak with her on the subject. That opportunity occurred today at another event I was attending on the subject of buying food locally grown.
The woman in question it turned out is one Victoria Lesser who was very well informed on the subject, and who suggested I visit Catskill Citizens, which I did this evening...what I read there, and so very basic research I did after visiting that site has me absolutely convinced that Fracking is both dangerous to our environment, and our human health...thus the word and title for this blog, Fracktoid...one who has been, is being, or will be harmed by the deplorable act used by gas drilling companies known as Fracking.
Sure that some might think my decision is made in haste...after all, how can one do adequate enough research in a few scant hours to make a decision on such an important issue, and how can one be against a gas industry practice that makes it easier to extract gas from underneath the ground...the politically incorrect part of me could simply state, "I'm opposed to anything that has George W Bush, Dick Cheney and Haliburton's filthy dirty corrupt fingerprints on it", and be speaking truth. However, there are far more insidious reason that have caused me to, in a moment, become a citizens opposed to Fracking. For reasons of brevity in this opening post, shall simply list a few on my list, which I am sure will grow into quite a lengthy one as time goes by and the story unfolds itself.
1. The chemicals used in this process are known HUMAN carcinogens, that among other things, cause cancer and birth defects.
2. The industry, much like the nuclear industry is hiding much of the horrific truth of the chemicals used in their deadly cocktail from members of the Stakeholder Communities under the guise and claim of Proprietary Secrets...it is noted here, that should a citizen group choose to CHALLENGE THIS CLAIM with say the EPA, the company(ies) would have to prove their right and need to keep the recipe secret from their competitors far outweighs a stakeholder community's NEED TO KNOW. No lawyer here, but be willing to bet the industry would lose this one if properly challenged...especially since everyone in the industry who is doing FRACKING probably already has the recipe, or one of a similar dangerous concoction, which means they are claiming Proprietary Privilege for only ONE REASON...to keep citizens from being able to truly measure the risks to both human health and the environment from the egregious dangerous act of FRACKING.
3. The US EPA which has a deplorable record of protecting both human health and the environment with the help of one George W. Bush has exempted the gas industry and their fracking from the Clean Water Act...there is ONLY ONE REASON TO DO THIS...fracking RUINS YOUR SAFE DRINKING WATER!
It was not too long into my research that I saw MUCH WAS and IS being done by some very fine groups, and my only hope, is that this little blog will add more fuel to the proverbial fire as communities wake up all across America and start saying NO TO THE GAS INDUSTRY...some fights are worth fighting, and this is one of them.
